Ce tableau est un de mes premiers portraits animaliers réalisés sans croquis préparatoire.
Ce travail consiste à réaliser le sujet au pastel sans trait grâce à des superpositions de couleurs.
Peindre dans la masse plutôt que de remplir, de colorier un espace délimité par des traits.
Je ne recherche pas la perfection, la représentation stricte poil par poil mais plutôt la sculpture du sujet par la couleur. J'ai donné une dimension supplémentaire à ce chat en lui ajoutant un reflet inachevé ce qui prolonge l'oeuvre en dehors de ses frontières. J'ai également intégré l'animal dans son fond comme si l'arrière plan représentait les ingrédients de l'oeuvre elle même.
Ce n'est pas un tableau réservé aux amoureux des chats mais aussi aux amateurs de design, de couleur et de sculpture.

This painting is one of my first animal portraits. I did not make any preparatory sketch for it. The idea was to build up the subject in pastels by resorting to a superposition of colours, without drawing any line whatsoever. So, rather than delineate the contours and then fill up the drawing, I decided to directly lay down the colours, making the most of the thick pigments of the pastels to achieve this « carved-from-the-block » feel.

I did not embark on a quest for perfection, nor for the exact reproduction of life-like appearance. My aim was not to represent each single hair of the animal as accurately as possible. Quite the opposite, in fact. What really matters here is the rendering of the subject which, through an artful combination of colours, stands out as a sculpted matter. Moreover, I imparted a further dimension to the cat by adding the unfinished reflection of the animal at the base of the painting, as if the art-piece extended beyond the mere limits of the canvass. I made the deliberate choice of presenting the cat on a colourful background composed of polychromatic vertical bars. The pattern displays the whole range of hues and tones I used to fashion the animal.

This painting is not exclusively earmarked for cat-lovers. It will undoubtedly catch the eye of enlightened art-collectors with a taste for design, sculpture and colour.
